Today in Science, both classes reviewed the water cycle by playing various classroom games. Room 15 has a water cycle quiz tomorrow based on their notes from class. All they really need to do is look them over, as we went over the answers to the test questions today.
Room 12 will have this quiz on Thursday after another review tomorrow. In math, both classes had their Chapter 5 (division of decimals) test. Math homework tonight is to finish "Morning Math" where the page is labeled "First day."

In Math today, we crept ever closer to a good understanding of how to divide decimals accurately. Hoping to get to the end of the chapter and give the test by the middle of next week.
In Science I passed back the first drafts of the students' paragraph essays about how energy passes through a prairie ecosystem. Second drafts, which will count as a quiz grade, are due on Tuesday. Students who never passed in a first draft (!) will have points taken off for lateness when they complete their second drafts. I was out sick on Tuesday, Monday was a holiday, and yesterday was a snow day. This was my first time teaching math to Rooms 12 and 15 since last Thursday, the 11th!
So for both classes today, it was catch-up and a review of divison by decimals. Room 15 has three assignments tonight, two of which should be already mostly done from class. 1) Morning Math (Monday , Tuesday, and Wednesday sections) 2) Practice Book 5.7 and 5.8 (homework from last week and this) 3) "The Only One in the World" decimal division review worksheet. Room 12 is a similar story, but they only need to have Monday and Wednesday of the Morning Math done, and only Practice Book 5.8 (homework) for tomorrow. Room 12 also has the "Only One in the World" worksheet to complete. In Science both classes worked in groups to demonstrate the phases of the water cycle. No written homework. In Science class this afternoon we reviewed the water cycle. This is a very familiar topic to Shaw School students, as it was covered in 4th grade and in one of the younger grades as well. So after a brief review, Room 12 worked on a task card activity, while Room 15 watched a Mystery Science presentation on why the winter weather gets so cold in this hemisphere.
In Math, Room 12 did some complex problem solving, while Room 15 reviewed the division of decimals. Room 12 has Practice Book 5.8 for homework, while Room 15 has Practice Book 5.7. Today in math, both classes worked on dividing decimals. It's a challenging topic for 5th grade, and the students are working very hard.
In Science, both classes talked about water and its many uses on Earth. They also viewed a video about groundwater, a topic not many kids really get a chance to think about. Homework: For Room 12, it's Practice Book Lesson 5.7, both sides, and for Room 15 it's the worksheet, "Shopping for Decimal Division." No Science homework tonight. |
