August 26, 2023 Hi– This is the first weekly newsletter for parents of students in Rooms 123 and 124, Mr. Mistretta’s math and science classes.. It’s to inform parents about what’s happening in class, what special events may be coming up, and to reinforce communication that may have come home from the school or district office. Communication Almost everyone I’ve spoken to has said that they prefer that I contact them via e-mail if there are questions or concerns. It’s the same for me. If you have something you need to ask me or talk about, e-mail is the best first way to do it. Sometimes I’ll follow up with a phone call, especially if the subject is so sensitive or complicated that it’d be easier to have a conversation. I’m at [email protected] I also maintain an Instagram account, where I sometimes post photos of class and school activities. Just follow me at mr.mistretta to join up. Third, there’s the Remind app, which I use to send out last-minute reminders about upcoming class and school events. Text the message @room123mi to the number 81010 on your cell phone to receive these. Student dismissals The school is using the Parent Patrol app to keep track of how students are being dismissed from school this year. You should have already gotten an email about how to sign up. I’m writing this on the Saturday before the first day of school, so if you haven’t signed up yet and are having problems, call the school office right away. CHROMEBOOKS should be recharged every night for a full day of use in school. We have a daily snack time between 9:00 and 9:30 every morning, so it’s OK for students to bring something from home to have at this time. Homework Math homework this year is ST Math– an average of 20 minutes per night on Monday through Thursday. Students may also do all 80 minutes on one night, or spread the 80 minutes out as you and they see fit. I’ll provide class time to help them work on it and reach the weekly goal, too. Activities for the first three days I’ll introduce the kids to the math and science programs this week, but we won’t work much in the textbooks and workbooks until next week. Our math program is Eureka Math, and we use a variety of materials for Science, including Elevate Science as a textbook. School supplies The student supply list is here. I sent it home on “Step Up Day” in June, but sometimes things do get lost in the shuffle, so if you haven’t had a chance to pick up everything for your 5th grader yet, it’s no worries. Let me know if there’s any long-term issue. Also, We take donations of Clorox-type wipes and boxes of tissues, which 5th graders go through at an alarming rate. :) That’s all for now. E-mail me with any questions and have a great rest of the weekend! Sincerely, John Mistretta Grade 5 Math and Science teacher Rooms 123 and 124 SHAW SCHOOL 508-865-3541 extension 34123 5th grade Supply list for 2023-24: Required Materials: (2) pocket folders for class work (ELA/SS and Math/Science) (1) pocket folder for take home work (this will travel home - to- school so it should be sturdy) (2) One subject spiral bound notebooks (8X10 ½ ) 2 packages of pencils Packets of sticky notes 1 package of dry erase markers pencil/supply case (zippered pouch or hard case is fine) 2 glue sticks scissors colored pencils OR markers pencil eraser handheld pencil sharpener with shaving catcher Optional Items (nice to have but we will have some available to share): highlighters Donations throughout the year: Any donation your family is able to contribute to our classroom is greatly appreciated!
