Today, I was not in math class with Room 12, as I had a very very important meeting of great importance. :) The students say that
Ms. Berthiaume taught the "order of operations," PEMDAS for short. No homework was assigned. In Science, we finished our Pear Deck presentation on endotherms, ectotherms, and metabolism. Then we looked at and played games about some crucial vocabulary for a quiz next week. Stay tuned!

Today we practiced multiplying large numbers. The homework is in the Practice Book, Lesson 1.7, both sides. It was a thrilling math lesson and we did some ST Math too!
In Science we used Pear Deck software to learn about the difference between endotherms and ectortherms. We also discussed the intricacies of photosynthesis. And very intricate they are! Glucose! Carbon Dioxide! Chlooooorophyll! Wow. Anais and Ava helped with this blog entry, as they do every day. In Math today, we looked at numerical expressions like 4 + 7 and
15 - (3 + 5). Note that the expressions do not have an equals sign. That would make them equations. For homework tonight, the class should do Lesson 1.10 in the Practice Book (both sides). If your 5th grader has trouble with math homework, have them try it and do their best. They should remember how I've told them that any mistakes they make will be opportunities to learn, and that homework is graded not for its correctness but for its effort in completion. This is not to say that we don't care if the work is correct or not. I want to help prevent tears and frustration at home. If your child is having trouble understanding the work, have them complete it anyway to the best of their ability, and I'll deal kindly with it the next day in class. In Science class we visited the wonderful world of photosynthesis. Children who are not done with their Trophic Level drawings should work on them for 15 minutes tonight. In Math today, we reviewed that good old two digit and three digit multiplication again, and broke out the ST Math program to follow Jiji the Penguin through its 5th grade adventures. Homework is Lesson 1.6 in the Practice book, both sides.
In Science we discussed and made diagrams of the trophic levels of the animal and plant world. The diagrams are way artistic! Are you afraid of Friday the 13th? The students weren't. We practiced third and fourth grade multiplication this morning, then played some partner games to shore up our skills in the base ten system (powers of ten especially).
In Science we watched a Mystery Doug presentation on mushrooms, then continued our discussion of how animals and plants get energy to live and thrive. No homework this weekend except for students who owe assignments from earlier in the week. |
