It's a busy week. Wednesday night is Back to School Night (see the post after this one for a preview of the handouts), Thursday is Picture Day, and on Friday, we travel to the computer room to take the Fall MAP test in Math.
Today in Science we did a lot of catching up on work that needed finishing, but tomorrow we begin a discussion of pollination. The class is paying attention in Science really well. In Math, Room 15 students will wrestle with some complex word problems, while Room 12 delves into numerical expressions, a new topic for our 5th graders.

This Wednesday is Back to School Night at Shaw, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. I hope to meet as many parents and guardians of our Room 12 and 15 students as I possibly can.
Click here for an announcement flyer about the details of Back to School Night, and backtoschoolnight_letter.docxclick here for a copy of the letter I'll be giving out that night explaining in a little more details what goes on in my classroom. Looking forward to seeing you all-- have a great rest of the weekend! In Science today we had the most marvelous discussion of the differences between deciduous and evergreen trees. The children and I shared many notes and stories about the experiences we have had with trees.
In Math we looked at long multiplication problems (three digits times two digits), and will probably continue this topic tomorrow. Today I talked to the Room 12 class about using the link in the September 3rd post to use Quizlet to study for the Science vocabulary quiz this week.
Several students asked for the link to "join" my Quizlet class, so here it is: https://quizlet.com/join/H7drZj6eW I don't think you have to join the "class" to use the study set, but I'll be adding other sets as time goes on, so you might as well. I hope everyone's enjoying the crisp fall weather of this weekend! Some of our 5th graders went to the beach, so here's hoping for a really warm and sunny day to finish things off on Monday.
We will have three quizzes this week. There will be a vocabulary quiz in Science, covering the words we've discussed most in class. There's a Quizlet at https://quizlet.com/_3ngfp1 for anyone interested in getting a head start on their studying. We'll also have two math quizzes. The first will be on the kinds of problems we've been working on during Morning Math. I'll explain which problems to practice to the classes on Tuesday. The second will be on Lessons 1-1 through 1-5 in the Go Math book. I'll review all of that material this week in class so that students feel prepared for what they'll see on the quiz. Did you get the forms and classroom newsletter that went home on Thursday? We got at least six notices to put into the children's "Home Folders." If you aren't getting notices from the school from your 5th grader, please contact me so that I can talk to your child about what he or she is doing with them in school. |
